Entrepreneurial Intention of University Scientists in Colombia

Keywords: Business Owner, Entrepreneurial Intention, Scientific Researcher, Faculty

Abstract

This study aimed (1) to establish the main associations of social norms, attitudes, and behavior control variables with the Entrepreneurial Intention (EI) of university scientists in Colombia and (2) to identify the key factors that determine their EI. This descriptive correlational study adopted a quantitative approach, and the research design was non-experimental and cross-sectional. Two methods were used to analyze the data: multiple correspondence analysis and logistic regression. A stratified random sample of 636 scientists (in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) was taken from the database of the Colombian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Out of the group of all the answered surveys, 597 were valid. The results indicate that higher educational attainment (Ph.D. and Postdoc) is associated with the commercialization of research results. They also show that social norms have the biggest influence on EI. It is concluded that university scientists that exhibit the highest EI (i.e., those who have or have had a company, were starting one, or had made the decision to do so) have, in general, a positive view of the social norms and attitudes studied here.
