VERT: Virtual Education Tool in Medical Physics

Keywords: Virtual education, Medical Physics, Virtual Tools

Abstract

The use of virtual learning tools is growing rapidly in all areas of health care and science, including medical physics. In this regard, the Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT), designed in the United Kingdom in 2009, offers medical physics students the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge as they carry out repetitive activities in an interactive environment free from risks for patients or the equipment. VERT reproduces the physical environment of a radiotherapy room: linear accelerator, hand pendant support, radiation beam visualization, room planning data, tomographic image loading system, and Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM). Additionally, it simulates dose distribution and calibration measurements and offers the option of introducing patient positioning errors.
